The model 37 Rangemaster was Remington’s answer to the Winchester model 52. I used a Remington model 37 Rangemaster bolt action target rifle for two of the cartridges, and a Ruger 10/22 semiautomatic rifle for the third. All three of these quiet CCI long rifle cartridges made less noise than the CCI CB Short, and the CCI Quiet cartridge was quieter than the Ataman AP 16 pistol! I would not have predicted that.īut quiet sound is nothing without accuracy, so last Friday I went to AirForce Airguns test range and tested all three cartridges for accuracy at 25 yards. My eyes (and ears) were opened by this little test. The Subsonic hollowpoint pushed the sound meter to 110.9 dB. It registered 110.9 dB on the sound meter. I expected this cartridge to be the loudest of the three and it was, though not by that much. It’s the most powerful of the three cartridges I’m testing and, at 94+ foot-pounds, it’s close to the power of a standard speed. It puts out a 45-grain lead bullet at 970 f.p.s. The package indicates it is made for guns with silencers. The Quiet Semi-Auto was louder than the Quiet cartridge, at 109.2 dB. And although I had my electronic hearing protectors on during the testing, I could tell this one was more powerful just by the push it made when it fired. This one registered 109.2 dB - just a little louder than the Quiet round. I tested the discharge of this cartridge in the same Remington Model 33 bolt-action single shot as the rest of the cartridges. A semiautomatic action needs a bigger push to open the bolt, and the standard Quiet round can’t do it reliably. This cartridge has a 45-grain bullet and goes just a little faster than the standard Quiet round, at 835 f.p.s. We’ll look at the CCI Quiet Semi-Auto next.
The CCI Quiet produced 105.4 dB from a 24-inch barrel. With the meter in the same place for the Quiet the meter registered 105.4 dB The CB Short produced 112 dB with the meter three feet to the left of the muzzle. They use segmentation to ensure the hollowpoint opens up rather than relying on velocity. Kills very well but you don't see the exterior destruction like the higher velocity 1050fps hp. Opting for even more quiet for about 2 years I've been using the CCI segmented hp at 710fps. The 1050fps standard hp are not the quietest but I think the most deadly. But better hunting choices are the CCI subsonics hp mentioned above. My kimber shoots all the subsonics extremely well less than 1/2" at 50. Some bullets I used would fall into a similar category of what was originally posted and they work, federal gold medal match, remington target, remington subsonic, Eley. No need it is used multiple times a week/daily. Over a lot of years I have been using various subsonics for pest control around my property and have killed 100's of assorted "targets", gone thru quite a few boxes of almost entirely one shot one kill scenarios. They are round nose and designated for target, they will kill a squirrel or pretty much anything else out there but at subsonic speed not as quickly as an expanding hollowpoint. I wouldn't use the ones in the 1st post simply because there are better choices.
